Common questions

How long does an employee have to return a company laptop after leaving?

There's no legal deadline in the UK, but best practice is to dispatch a return kit 5–7 business days before the employee's last day, so the device is already in transit by the time they leave. Waiting until after departure typically drops recovery rates significantly, since the return competes with the employee's next job and other priorities.

What happens if a leaver doesn't return their laptop?

Most companies follow a written offboarding policy: a reminder email around day 5, a formal notice referencing the employment contract's equipment clause around day 10–14, and, if still unresolved, a decision on cost recovery or legal escalation. ReturnKits' portal tracks each order's status automatically, so outstanding returns are visible before they become a problem rather than discovered months later.

Do I need to provide packaging myself?

No. Every ReturnKits order ships a complete kit — padded protective packaging sized for the device type, a prepaid tracked return label, and printed instructions — directly to the employee's address. They don't need to source a box, print anything, or find a courier drop-off point themselves.

Can I track a return in real time?

Yes. Every order includes live courier tracking from the moment the kit is dispatched through to signed delivery confirmation at your destination address, visible in your ReturnKits portal.

What if the employee has already left and I don't have their current address?

You'll need a delivery address for the kit — typically the employee's home address on file with HR. If you have no way to reach the employee at all, ReturnKits can still help once contact is re-established, but the kit itself does need somewhere to be delivered.

Is there a service that sends a prepaid box to collect equipment from remote workers in the UK?

Yes — that's exactly what ReturnKits does. You enter the remote employee's address and destination, and we dispatch a prepaid, tracked return kit directly to their door within 1 business day. They pack the device using the included instructions and hand it to the courier or drop it at a Post Office, with nothing to print or source themselves.
